Lorna Review

Ladies and gentlemen this review blog is going to be dedicated to reviewing films that belong to the sexploitation genre since not alot of people either no about or talk about any of those films. With that in mind I couldn't pass up the chance to talk about the king the sexploitation genre that being Russ Meyer and so join me as I review the 1964 Russ Meyer sexploitation film with the film itself being the first serious Russ Meyer film with the film itself being called simply "Lorna" enjoy.

The plot of the film is a bored housewife Lorna takes in a stranger unaware that he is an ex-convict meanwhile her husband Jim is at work and making plans for the couples first anniversary as a married couple. In terms of what I thought about the plot of this film in all honesty the plot of this film is in my opinion pretty good but at the same time plot itself is very weak which is a shame because I honestly did like the plot of this film.

Starring in this film is Lorna Maitland as Lorna , Mark Bradley as The Convict and James Rucker as Jim. Also starring in this film is Hal Hopper as Luther , Doc Scortt as Jonah , Althea Currier as Ruthie , Fred Owens as Ezra , Frank Bolger as Silas , Ken Parker as The Fisherman and we have the actual writer of this film Mister James Griffith as The Man Of God. What I personally find to be really interesting is that very few of the characters in this film have names with the vast majority of the characters that are appearing in this film instead going by whatever they are seen doing in this film or whatever there character in this film is meant to be which is something that I personally found to be rater interesting but that's just me.

In terms of what I thought about the acting that's featured /presented to us in this film in all honesty the acting that featured / presented to us in this film is alot better then it really had any right to be. Which is something that I personally found to be quite shocking mostly / simply because alot of the Russ Meyer films that i've personally had acting that was either very bad or acting that was at best OK and as such it was truly shocking to me personally / for me personally to see a Russ Meyer film that had some genuinely good acting in it.

I honestly feel that this film is perhaps one of if not the most dramatic films that Russ Meyer has ever made since even tho it has all of the things that we love in a Russ Meyer film. It also has interesting characters and alot of misdirection's in the plot all of which help make the film both interesting and as well entertaining because you never know what's going to happen next and you never know how the characters will be effected by whatever happens next either.

There is no way that I could review this film and not talk about the absolute fantastic and truly shocking ending. Simply because this is an ending that I personally never saw coming which trust me is a very rare thing and even when this ending was about to happen I didn't think that they would go all the way with this ending but nope they go all the way with this ending which not only makes this ending very memorable but also tragic at the same time.

What makes this ending tragic is the fact that Russ Meyer has the films female lead character Lorna die at the hands of someone that she's been shall we see keeping very good company with. This is something that not alot of filmmakers would go all the way with since alot of filmmakers would have the female lead survive the film but no Russ Meyer and screen writer and actor  James Griffith go all the way by having Lorna die basically at the hands of someone that she's been keeping very good company with and this makes the ending all the more tragic because mere moments earlier we see how much that she truly loves her husband Jim and that she even regrets doing what she's been doing while Jim has been away at work.

I honestly really do applaud this film since you hear of a Russ Meyer sexploitation film and you think of something like Supervixens or Beneath The Valley Of The Ultra Vixens. However what this film gives you is instead two characters who do truly care for each other and a story that is really crafted even if the plot of the film is pretty freaking weak but even so I think that this film is a very good example of what Russ Meyer could do when he was at his peak and as well in what is my opinion at least his absolute best.

This film has a total running time of one hour nineteen minuets and fifteen seconds which even for a story as thin as the story that's in this film that running time is still a bit on the long side. Since there really isn't enough story to cover that running time heck there's barely enough story to cover anything that's even close to an hour and as such I have to think that this film would have been better suited if this film was at least forty to forty five or fifty to fifty minuets long but it should be one hour nineteen minuets and fifteen seconds tho.

As a drama I really did like this film just due to the fantastic and truly shocking ending but what I also liked about this film is the fact that there are no true villains and as well as the fact that there are no true heroes either. Since our main female Lorna sleeps with a stranger multiple times and the person that we are led to believe is going to be the films main villain actually helps Lorna and Jim out in the fantastic ending and as such every single character in this film is more shades of grey then being straight up black and white.

Overall even tho i'm big fan of both Supervixens and as well as Beneath The Valley Of The Ultra Vixens. I honestly feel that this film is the best film that director Russ Meyer has ever made and since i've talked about both the good and as well as both of the bad things that are in this film in this very review boys and girls this film gets an 8 out of 10 from me and as for where I got all of the images that I used in this review. Well boys and girls I got all of the images that I used in this very review from Google Images and nowhere else and since I only went to Google Images for the images that I used in this very review I have no choice but to recommend that you guys use Google Images if for some reason that you wanted to use images from this very film.
